Combine Categorical Variables

Take two or more categorical variables and create a new categorical variable whose levels are all combinations of those variables (e.g., the combinations of ethnicity and gender).

Go to Variables > Categorical Variables > Combine categorical variables.

  1. Select two or more categorical variables from the dropdown.
  2. Click Combine to create a new variable containing every observed combination.

For example, combining gender = {male, female} and ethnicity = {NZ European, Māori, Pacific} creates a new variable with levels like male.NZ European, male.Māori, female.Pacific, etc.

If only one variable is selected, a copy of that variable is added to the dataset.
